Step Charge

Walk more,
unlock more screen time.

100 steps = 1 minute. An iPhone Screen Time app that lets you use social media and video apps only for the time you have walked for.

I want to stop scrolling social media. Is there an app that locks it until I walk?

Step Charge is an iPhone app that turns your steps into app time. 100 steps earns 1 minute, so 5,000 steps earns 50 minutes.

Blocked apps stay closed and open only while you use your charge. Steps are read from the Health app automatically, so there is nothing to start or stop, and steps from commuting or shopping count too.

Can it limit YouTube and games too, not just social media?

You choose what to limit: individual apps, whole app categories or websites, so you can cover social media, video and games together.

To use an app, pick how many minutes to unlock. A countdown on the Lock Screen shows the time left, and the apps are blocked again automatically when time is up, even if the app is closed.

I keep turning off my Screen Time limits. How can I make that harder?

Turn on Strict Mode, a paid feature, and you can no longer change the blocked apps or delete your data. To turn it off you schedule it, and it switches off 24 hours later (you can cancel within those 24 hours).

You can still remove the Screen Time permission in the iPhone Settings app, so it is not impossible to undo.

Can I save up steps and use them all on the weekend?

You can earn up to 50 minutes a day (5,000 steps) and hold up to 350 minutes. Charge expires 7 days after the day you earned it, and the oldest charge is used first.

The home screen shows today's steps, how many steps until your next minute, and your charge by day.

What if I cannot walk one day or need to reply to something urgent?

Emergency Unlock, a free feature, opens your blocked apps for 15 minutes once a day without using any charge.

You write a reason of at least 10 characters before it starts, and each reason is saved with the date in your emergency log.

How can I see my remaining time without opening the app?

Home Screen widgets (small and medium) and Lock Screen widgets (circular and rectangular) show your remaining time. All of them are free.

Do I need an account? What about privacy?

No account is needed. Your steps and usage history stay on your iPhone and are never sent anywhere.

Only your step count is read from the Health app; location and other health data are not used. The Screen Time permission is used only to block and unblock the apps you choose, never to see what you do in them.

How much does it cost?

The app is free, including step charging, app blocking, widgets and Emergency Unlock. All paid items are one-time purchases with no subscription.

Paid items are Strict Mode, character skins for the charge gauge (dog, cat and fish), and Step Charge Pro, which bundles both.

iPhone only (iOS 16.4 or later), in English and Japanese.
